SR22 Auto Insurance

If your driver's license has been suspended or revoked, you may need to obtain an SR22 auto insurance policy. SR22 auto insurance is a liability insurance policy that is required for reinstatement of your driver's license, after it has been suspended or revoked.

This "unique” type of auto insurance gives the insurance company the authority to notify the department of motor vehicles if the policyholder's auto insurance policy lapses or if it is cancelled or terminated for any reason. This notification, called an "SR-26 filing,” is required.

In most states, drivers will have to carry SR22 auto insurance for up to three consecutive years before their driver's license is reinstated. If the SR22 auto insurance policy cancels for any reason, the policyholder will have to start the three-year period over again, beginning with day one. This means that the policyholder will lose any time that he has already carried the policy.

In some states, SR22 auto insurance is available only in cases involving driving under the influence or "DUI,” and it may also be required in some states to prevent license revocation or suspension.

If you need SR22 auto insurance, you should find out how insurance companies define "high-risk” drivers. Generally speaking, high-risk drivers have the following characteristics:

  • Has a poor driving record (DUI's, moving violations, excessive amount of traffic tickets).
  • Has bad credit.
  • Has lapses in coverage (pays his/her premium late).
  • Lives in an unsafe area.
  • Owns a high-performance vehicle (Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Lamborghini).
