The first two numbers refer to bodily injury liability coverage (in thousands) and the third number refers to property damage liability (in thousands). If you live in California, you will find that the minimums are listed as 15/30/5.

The first number, $15,000, refers to the maximum someone would receive in the case they were injured in an accident that was your fault. The second number, $30,000, refers to the total bodily injury coverage for that accident. Simply put, if you are at fault and medical expenses for all of those involved in the accident exceed $30,000, your insurance would only cover $30,000 and you would be responsible for the rest.

The last number is the minimum property damage liability coverage you must have ($5,000 for Californians). Keep in mind that if the result of an accident leads to property damage in excess of $5,000, you will be responsible for paying all expenses your insurance company will not cover.
